Noticed a headline that said Harry's new bird is a cousin. Really They have inter-bred for 100s of years. That's why they have big ears and all look the same.

Two comments from an American.
First, to be of noble descent is to be descended from thieves. The men who became kings, barons, dukes, etc. were the powerful men with warriors following them that stole from the ordinary people. They took their land, labor and lives and rarely gave back anything to justify their taking. Second, Victoria almost ruined her heir Edward by keeping the throne as long as she did and Elizabeth is doing the same to Charles. Reigning for life made some sense when the lifespan was 40-50 years at the top of society. Today, if you're going to have kings and queens, they should bring their heirs into the job as an apprentice when the heir is in his/her 20s and abdicate when the heir is in his/her 40s. Elizabeth can be expected to live into her 90s. She's got access to the best possible medical care. Hell, my mother is 101, going on to 102, and she's just an ordinary woman. If Elizabeth lives another 10 years, Charles will be in his 70s when takes the throne, and he could live another 20 years after that. In 30 years the bloom will be off William and he'll probably no longer be a media darling. |

Edward VII was a playboy prince but became a highly respected King (Teddy the Peacemaker) The Royal Family has to take things as they happen. The last King was catapulted into the job and it probably shortened his life , this resulted in the long reign by our present Queen. She would no doubt love to live her own life but has a strong sense of duty and will die in harness.400 engagements a year is a lot at that age.Or any other age for that matter.Charles also has a strong sense of duty and he'll do well as King. Like it or not the Queen IS our Head of State through legal process (including being chosen and acclaimed by Parliament) and actually benefits the taxpayer in net terms.Anyone doubting the value of what she does should look at the recent Irish visit and also see the effect she has on groups and organisations she visits. This couldn't be done by anyone else. |
