Sandy began the 1971-72 season as the star of a CBS-TV comedy called "Funny Face". By the time (or close to it) that the first 13 episodes, including the pilot, had been filmed, the tumor had been discovered and diagnosed. Sandy underwent surgery which successfully removed the tumor (it was benign), but left her unable to see out of her left eye. She would later marry (then divorce) the doctor who did the surgery.

Because of her medical situation, the "Funny Face" series could not continue. However, CBS did bring Sandy back for the 1972-73 season as the star of "The Sandy Duncan Show". But, while TV critics liked Sandy, they didn't like the show, and competition from ABC and NBC combined with a weak Sunday nite spot killed the series after 13 episodes.
