I thought true communists never let dissidents escape elsewhere to do damage. Stalin didn't let Trotsky escape, even though he had to wait years to get him.

That's who you'd be in a new revolution, Trotsky, the earnest hand-wringing communist who had to run for it and then get killed later anyway.

Egalitarian parties are still strong in France and in general in Europe, but they are divided.

If you have European roots, you must know that your ancesters probably were exploited by the elites during centuries (apart if you are the grandchild of the Duke of Bowlinggreen) and that's probably why they escaped Europe and travelled to America.

It always amuses me when people imagine that Trotsky was some more palatable alternative to Stalin. The two of them were very similar, the only difference was that Trotsky had an "export the Revolution now" policy . . . but really, the beef between them was much more about "who's going to be killer and who'll be killed".

I've got to jump in here and point out that some of our ancestors found the British Empire to be neither liberal or reasonable, and thus the USA was born.

Insofar as the wacky inheritors of the Puritans, like the evangelicals and Pentecostals and so forth, yes, they are here, but so long as they don't try to make everyone worship Jesus or take away the porn no one cares what they do.

There was a long stretch of time in England where being on the wrong religious side got you an appointment with the royal headsman and his axe. That is hardly liberal, from my point of view. You may keep your kings and Cromwells and the Church of England, we'd rather have none of that here, even if it means we've got to tolerate some religious crazies out in the backwoods.
