Apple v Microsoft

Had a network outage here last 12 hours and no internet access
Damn was it boring without access

So to pass the time thought I'd do some work on my computer, ripping DVD's and converting them into MOV files so they can be played on the TV.

At the same time I had iTunes running and was playing a game called Governor of Poker, my iMac didn't even stall, cough, burp .... had I been using Windows the thing would have keeled over and died

I hate Windows, really do .
A great example, 3 nights ago at work I had a problem with a machine at my workplace, couldn't figure out what was wrong visually so I went and got the workshops lap top , has Windows 7 on it, to use the Allen Bradley PLC software and get into the machines program. After 10 minutes I figured out what was wrong in the logic, to cut a story short I had to re load the program. Not knowing how up to date the program was on the lap tops C Drive I decided to get a copy from our engineering office which would be up to date.

Went into the office, plugged in a memory stick, got the copy, went back out onto the machine, plugged the memory stick into lap top .... waiting for driver ionstallation .... waiting waiting waiting Finished

Then went and clicked on Start, My Computer and the C Drive was there, D drive was there, no memory stick after 3/4 of an hour of fucking around it decided to show up Next morning I get an ass kicking on why it took so long to get the machine running again when it was something that should have taken maybe 15 minutes ended up over an hour.

That's not the only Windows machine I've experienced that on either.

That's 5 external drives I have plugged into my iMac, 2 are named the same thing, ... try that on a Windows machine and it would have a Cardiac Arrest

Please try a convince me that Windows is better than Mac

I'm a bit of an apple fan-boy too, I kinda always have been, I've always much preferred how their machines look, and when I got one of my own in 2008, the difference is amazing.

Growing up in the 90s with windows, you just kinda expect computers to be crap, it's as if we all just got used to it, like some mass delusion. The author Neal Stephenson even wrote a fascinating short essay called 'In the Beginning was the Command Line' which was published in about 1998, I think, in which he compared the OS's around at the time. If I remember right, his analogy for apple is that they are (or were) like a sports car - expensive, great handling, and a few hardcore, dedicated users who would die for them. Linux was like a free tank - costs nothing, strange, and nobody knows about it. And Windows was a family saloon - people drive them because they were heavily advertised, and there were lots of repair shops around.

I have known a few casual computer users, who are used to Windows, be very surprised by how quick and slick free OS's like Ubuntu are.

I've had my apple for over 4 years, and I use it all day, every day, I have multiple programmes open at the same time, I use it for work, to watch movies etc, and it just keeps going and going and going - I hardly ever even re-start it. I'm happy to pay a little more for an apple computer, because it will last longer, and won't cause me as many problems along the way.

That said, I think Excel (and Word) are way better than whatever Apple's version are called (Numbers? Textpad? I can't remember). And I did have an Apple ipod, which was pretty decent........for 9 months, then the button broke. So I took it to the Apple Genius store, and the guy said, 'Yep, the button's broken' (thanks genius), and they couldn't fix it. Best they could do is offer me a replacement at a reduced price (which is still very expensive). So I bought the replacement............then the button on that one broke of its own accord too.

I have been around computers for too many years and I too grew up with Windoze... starting with 3.1

Some few years back - 5 or 6 - I decided to give Ubuntu (Linux) a go and have not looked back since. I doubt anything would persuade me to change back to Micro$oft products.

OK, it was bit of a learning curve to start with but I learned other software systems and Ubuntu is no different. A little bit of reading up and I soon picked it up. Some folks say it is "geeky" but to be honest, the Ubuntu desktop is similar to any icon-driven software package. People seem to think it is all command line driven but that is far from the truth. It is very light on computer resources so machine run faster and smoother - especially older computers.

There is also an excellent online "community" that can be called on for support or a little help if needed. I have found everyone I have contacted through the help forums to be friendly and more than happy to give advice..

As regards programs like Excel and Word - why not look at Libre Office? It works in the same way as the M$ equivalents and is well supported, a simple transition from one to t'other and is free...

I have an old pc with Excel and Word on that my wife gave me, I only use it because sometimes my clients want me to programme them a bespoke thing in Excel or something, otherwise I probably wouldn't ever use it........

Like most, During the early 90's I was exposed to Windows, mostly at work and just got so used to using Windows, that also went for Word, Excell, Powerpoint and Outlook.

I bought Microsofts Office for Mac 2011 for just that reason, was so used to using them and will give credit to Microsoft, those 4 work very well on the Mac and .... probably better than on a Windows machine

I remember trailmaster saying a Mac can't do all the things a Windows machine will, if only he knew how wrong he was

What I really like, the odd occasion I get to visit the Apple store in Melbourne is the level of service It's like walking into a car dealership and the salesperson knows everything about the product. Don't know if it happens at other Apple stores around the world but the one in Melbourne also has tutorial sessions you can book yourself in for for those new to Apple, I've never used it but do know someone who did and they said the hour or so they were there was all they needed to get to know how it works and then learn the rest themselves.

The amount of problems I've had with Apple Mac's I can count on one hand and all were minor. 2 Macs I've owned and not even 5 problems, the 6 Windows machines I've had it would have to number over 100, not joking either.

People who get a lot of troubles with windows... often are women or elderly people.

Honestly speaking, Apple products work great, but are far too expensive for what we often need.

I don't like his choice of external hardware either. Bad enough that he has a Mac, but Seagate & LaCie as well? That's sounds gay to me

He should get an honorable Japanese Toshiba drive, or an efficient German Siemens, or a robust Western Digital

I have a WD 5TB. Works very well. Recommended

Just ordered another from Germany. Only €134,- including postage. Locally it would have cost over €200,-
