why would a 8 minute mp4 video be almost 2GB?
I downloaded a 8.5 minute mp4 video that's 1.93GB.
It's 1920x1080 but for that running time I would not expect more than maybe 500-600 MB file size The data rate is unusually high, 31944kbps total bitrate 32133kbps. It plays OK with VideoLan. Any idea why the the data rate and file size would be so large?

2 things come to mind...
It's possible that something went wrong and a larger chunk of the video is not playable? Does the video stop rather abruptly? (like it is supposed to be much longer) I've had incomplete downloads ending up 90% of the file but only playing 20% of it. Another possibility is bad encoding (i once tried a few times to edit and resize video's - which i apparantly sucked at - and i ended up with cutting a clip from let's say a 1 hour 1 GB video into a 5 minute clip which ended up almost 1 GB large... And even ending up with poor video quality. :/ |

the file plays fine and does not cut off or show any problem during playback.
My guess is that it's been converted from a file that was originally meant to play on UHQ or 4K. I think it was converted and "downscaled" to play on a 1080 monitor but if so, I'd expect the file size to shrink accordingly. I doubt that there is any visual benefit to that high a data rate on a 1080P monitor. Could it have something to do with compression or lack thereof?

Most likely has a very high bit rate and high quality audio setting when it was ripped or encoded.

Yes most likely that insane bitrate. I have successfully used the free Video to Video (Media Converters) to re-encode video files to mp4 for use on my android phone. Reducing the bitrate sometimes resulted in a new file of only 1/3 the original.

As you said, the file shouldn't be bigger than 600 MBs. Maybe it's just me being cynical, but the uploader might just be a prick and purposely made the file bigger to get you to try to pay for a premium account to download the file.
