I read this thread from time to time,

Is there anything that's actually good with Windows 10

When you wipe it off your drive and replace it with Linux, you don't lose any money because it's free.

I use essentially two machines in my work:
The first one is a desktop HP which runs Windows 7 Pro 32 Go with a RAM of 8 Go.
The second one is a laptop HP with 4 Go which I converted to Windows 10.

Frankly I prefer the first one.
I did not find anything new and interesting in Windows 10.

With Windows 10 I had to twiddle with pilots.
I had to reinstall most of them and I had no sound for a while.
I lost time to have it working fine.

I certainly would not go to the Internet through Windows explorer; I still do it with FireFox.

Perhaps in the future MS will release new options which would be useful, but frankly I doubt it.

If you are running Windows 7 I advise you to wait until June 2016 to do your upgrade.
You have everything you need on Windows 7 (or Windows 8/8.1).

When they launched Windows 10 MS announced that we have until July 2016 to make the jump.
And it is a real jump comparable to a parachute jump.

The only thing I can remember that was better than Win 7 was that Win 10 was a bit speedier. I was running a dual core running at about 2.8 GHz with 4 GB RAM at the time I Beta tested Win 10 (64). Didn't really have any problems with the machine on Win 7, but it was a bit faster on Win 10.

Fast enough to warrant putting Win 10 back on? Nope, not even close. I'd keep Win 7 and/or Linux on the machine before putting Win 10 on.

Default Help?

To the tech savvies here -- I've gone back over pages of comment... but, not to the first page, so... maybe I repeat:

I have Windows 7 Home Pro... largely satisfied with it other than the standard load of tripe that comes with my MSN homepage.

I use 6-year-old Acer laptop largely for e-mail communication, download of photo images and a just bit of on-line buying. Use MSN for e-mail. Speed is okay.

I don't download any music or vids.

I don't have/use smartphone.

I'm not on any of the "social media" services.

I have an ancient (slow) HP printer that adequately serves my needs and am concerned that Windows 10/HP drivers would be incompatible.

I am concerned that after the "free" period Micro will -- at some point -- find a way to extract money from me for the service.

Am I merely an entrenched, reactionary old fart, or are there good (by fellas who know about this stuff) reasons for me to abandon 7?

Thanks

Yes, you are an entrenched, reactionary old fart ((), but there is also no good reason for you to abandon Win7 at this stage.
The "free" period lasts until July next year, so there is plenty of time. Maybe (but it seems doubtful), Win10 will have improved so much by then that we will all be converted. Or maybe not... If Win 7 works for you, why change?

cossack - i am most definitely not one of the tech savvies here but in my opinion nor are you an entrenched, reactionary old fart. think about it this way: if you go to the supermarket you buy what you want, you don't buy one of everything just because it's there and nor would you expect the supermarket to chuck stuff in your trolley that you didn't want (free or otherwise). or this: if you have a car you are happy with that gets you from a to b without any trouble you don't go and get a new car that might require a jorney through the whole alphabet to get where you're going.

eventually this is going to bite microsoft's arse and then they will either change it or their real motivation will become clear for everyone to see. personally i will happily be on windows 7 until they blow up and then it'll be mac or linux time.

and maybe microsoft could put an app for farting on the next update of windows 10 so that you could rate them and put them on facebook or twitter or youtube. a 1-10 system of grading according to sound, smell or offensiveness ought to be sufficient.

Just in case it was misunderstood, the "entrenched, reactionary old fart" bit was a joke.

Default I wonder

I wonder about all this story about Microsoft.

I mean perhaps there is more than a simple desire to gain percentages of market (or simply keep them).

There is no doubt Microsoft behaves like shit (excuse the word).
They are lying more and more and this infuriates me (you also, I am sure).

But the more I look at the insides of my machines the more I am wondering.

For example Apple is beginning to do the same.
They just released a new version of their OS.
This is all very well but why do they insist so much to have me upgrading?

Everyday I am prompted on my iPhone for an upgrade.
They are really insisting and I become weary.

Similarly I have been nagged by Acrobat.

The same for my Internet provider.

It seems it is free for all.

Every distributor is becoming to insist more and more loudly for having their clients upgrading.
Now it is continually, everyday.

I admit that because of Windows 10 some software editors feel the need to keep compatible but there are limits.

And I am sure this is only the beginning because Windows 10 is NOT MATURE.

thecossack,

Just my opinion, but I would stick with Win 7. The Acer you have may, or may not, be able to handle Win 10. More than likely, Win 10 has all the drivers for it but, after Win 10 install, it might work correctly, or it may not. If the machine is working fine for you now then stick with Win 7.

Now, as to the future, you may want to keep an eye on this thread to have an idea of whats happening with Win 10, but you may also want to learn as much as you can about some of the free varieties of Linux. Probably find some Live sticks and start playing with it so that if, in a few years, you decide MS can just go f&Ck off, then you'll already know how to use its replacement. Thats the path a lot of techs have already decided on.

Good luck.
