GREEN BOOK
Working class and tough guy Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen)is hired by the not only impeccably but also impeccably mannered pianist and composer Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali)to drive him to and from and 8 week tour a rollercoaster road trip ensues PRAISE: WOW talk about an Odd Couple !! The two men couldnt be more different and not just racially ! Director/writer Peter Farrelly and writers Nick Vallelonga and Brian Hayes Currie have crafted a movie out of the real life events of two men that not only examines prejudices ,how friendship has no bounds if we really sit back and allow ourselves to listen to each other. Both lead actors are terrific in their roles, become fully immersed in characters, who have their inner demons, and trying to escape the shadows of their pasts. There is a good balance of humor and also the horrors of racism.Brought out at times by the necessity of The Green Book itself which was a guide for where African Americans could stay while traveling through the United States. There are harrowing scenes of the brutality of racism and the cold casual views towards it. "Oh you are so talented Don....applause applause....oh you have to use the bathroom...well you're welcome to go outside !! The two leads will likely get several award nominations. PROBLEMS:Some minor predictable plot paths.A subplot is touched on several times but goes nowhere I encourage everyone to read the real life story about these two gentleman Green Book is a stunning and a heart warming story and it's one of the best films of 2018 Scale of 1-10 a 9 |

My Dinner With Herve
HBO Films delivers another good screenplay adaptation--this time from director Sacha Gervasi. He tells the chaotic and heart-breaking story of the life of actor Herve Villechaize (Peter Dinklage). Magazine writer Danny Tate (Jamie Dornan) is commissioned to write an amusing filler story on the pint-sized former Fantasy Island costar...a man who has fallen on hard times, even further than he will admit. Himself in a period of rough life, Tate is first annoyed by Herve's antics--taking him about town to strip clubs and being less than forthcoming with his facts--then finally understanding as he begins to learn the realities of being different. It's well-acted, pretty well-written...and yes it's standard HBO puffiness. But it's pretty good. Dinklage is great as a carousing and fragile Villechaize. Supporting roles from David Strathairn and Andy Garcia were adequate. But the film belonged to Dinklage. B

Guess ??? I've found subtitles to FATHER GOOSE .... and may view it more times than " Star Wars" which Me & kids and I did 45 times.in Cinemas..... We've watched Star Wars, more times in TV obviously ... but 45 times in a cinema is pretty good as a 'nerd' qualicication surely Shirley ? Meanwhile... Cary and Leslie (and her legs) .... call me.... witty and best script outside Wilder and Diamond.... truly I'm boring a lot of you, I sense... but why not try it guys... ? ? / |

Ever watch "The Pride and the Passion" (1957) Cary Grant film? His only film that I have watched numerous times. Sophia Loren is the reason I watch it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pride_and_the_Passion

I watched "Rampage" (2018) - A Rock film - Giant ape, wolf and crocodile. The ex-wife from Billions is the bad person, Negan plays a good government official, the Rock plays the Rock. Special effects film. Suspend belief and just enjoy the CGI destruction. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rampage_(2018_film)
2 of 5 from me. Watch it if is free and you got nothing better to do. Internationally, the film made 3x the money it made in the US, probably because foreigners liked to watch the US city of Chicago getting destroyed. No boobies. Last edited by Rogerbh; December 5th, 2018 at 02:12 PM.. |

I watched "Too Big to Fail" (2011) HBO movie https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Too_Big_to_Fail_(film) I think I had it mixed up with "The Big Short" (2015) and never made time to watch it before.
William Hurt and Paul Giamatti play the Government officials - Hurt's U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson was from Goldman Sachs - who try to stop a worse replay of the 1930's Financial collapse. A very depressing story of what happens when people get very greedy and fuck up the financial market. What is the most depressing is at the end when the measures taken to stop the disaster seem to have strengthened the hands of the financial institutions so that they can take huge risks because they are almost all "too big to fail" - without causing huge catastrophic problems for the economy. Huge amounts of money were paid by these players to their management as bonuses after this event. No wonder people want to execute them. 3.5 out of 5 a real life horror story that is still ongoing. |

Just watched the latest 2018 Tom Cruise Mission Impossible movie, so spoilers ahoy! I'm generally a fan of Tom Cruise films, but for me, this was even worse than The Mummy and I really hated it. Considering that J.J Abrams was the producer and they clearly spent a load of money on it, this was awful. The story about an attempt to recover three plutonium bomb components was stupid from the outset and there were plenty of serious technical mistakes. Perhaps that doesn't matter as the general public has no idea what this technology looks like, how it works or how it's handled. But the mentioned yield of 5 megaton for the bombs demonstrated that the script was written by someone lacking a basic understanding of all this.
Anyway the key features of this rubbish production are a number of action sequences. A fair bit of shooting takes place, often without too much reason. Tom and colleague take a plane flight from a USAF base in Germany to France and for absolutely no obvious reason, they make a parachute drop through a thunderstorm into Paris that almost goes wrong. Then there's a punch-up in this swanky men's room that has the feel of a fight in the last Terminator film. Any ordinary person would be killed by what happens but not in this production. Lots of French police are shot dead and there are some admittedly very good motorcycle and car chases through parts of Paris. Great stuff, if you've not seen Ronin I suppose? The stupidity of this film rolls on, with endless continuity mistakes and a silly race across the rooftops of London buildings that are not linked. They end up in Kashmir (that's really New Zealand) and there are some quite good helicopter sequences. Seen all this stuff before, but it was okay. Anyway, at the end, both remaining nuclear bombs are defused at the last moment and Tom has saved the world. The only thing I liked about this film was Rebecca Ferguson, who is a very desirable woman. That's it. My rating is 2/10. A piece of total crap. Apologies to any Tom Cruise fans, but this is probably the worst film I've seen this year and it was also far too long at almost 2.5 hours. |

Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End; one of those movies you really have to watch more than once; throws a lot of stuff and plots at us at once; a lot to process. |
