Don't remember why I quit that game half way through, but it must have been something to when I lived in L.A. (Maybe not the 1940's).. At that time I also rejected Mafia which looked good at the time. Everything you mentioned was true then, graphics for the time, story, play and mechanics. I guess it just rubbed me the wrong way or I found some glitches and software holes that I came up on, as I did in GTA and Manhunt. The game had a mega huge following on my GTA based forums, and people really loved it so I know it has a following and fan base. Hope you enjoy the game and make it past my level, to those who really enjoyed it mate. |

You should give it another try, provided you still own the game, Trip. I'd say the story was obviously influenced by the writings of James Ellroy but not necessarily L.A. Confidential, although Phelps strikes you as another Edmund Exley or even Mal Considine from The Big Nowhere.
What I'm trying to say is that, considering the level of violence, it's much closer to the twisted dark noirs of James Ellroy than a hommage to the classic film noir. |

I assumed you were playing the remastered version. I was just curious. It would not be surprising if the cancer of monetization (paying for virtual ammo etc.) had already spread to remastered versions of some older games.

My adventure in 1947 Los Angeles is coming to an end. There's only one case left to be solved and this makes me very sad. I've made a lot of mistakes, been yelled at by my superiors, but I'm definitely going to play this game again. The next game I'm looking forward to is the Resident Evil 2 Remake. Hopefully it will be out in early 2018, just in time for the 20th anniversary of the original's release. My body is ready. Quote:

Finished L.A. Noire. I can't remember the last time I was enjoying a good game like this one. Only The Last of Us comes close as far as modern games are concerned. A true gem of modern gaming.

Skyrim: Beyond Bruma, journey to Frostcrag Spire
I've been a PC/console RPG player for over thirty years. I just recently had what may have been the most immersive journey I ever experienced in an RPG fantasy game!
For those who may not be aware, Skryim: Beyond Bruma was released earlier this year. It is to date the single largest fan-made mod addition to Skyrim. Beyond Bruma, due to its sheer size and scope is nearly a complete game on its own. It brings the huge Oblivion-era northern region of Cyrodill back to life including the city of Bruma. I have been constantly blown away the more I explore this new land. It is beyond staggering the amount of effort and detail the people who made this put it into it! I am finding that the storylines and dungeons to actually be more immersive than even the stuff that Bethesda created for Skyrim itself. In Beyond Bruma the dungeons and paths are truly immersive and they feel genuinely perilous. You can get lost easily both out in the wilderness and underground. There are many places in dungeons where you have to use torches because it is simply too dark to see. You find yourself on the way to accomplish one thing only to be side-tracked by a half-dozen other things along the way. When you are looking out over the mountains from the city of Bruma, you can see in the far, far distance some kind of mysterious wizard's tower perched high up on the tallest peak of mountains. The game does not give any directions how to get up there, and there is no specific questline that takes you in that direction. Indeed the creators of the game don't even inform you if the tower is something that you can even physically reach as a character. You must simply begin heading in the direction of the mountains and make your way upwards. It took me two and a half hours of real time exploring to finally reach the wizards' tower. Just when you thought for the fifth time you were nearing the peak you would be cut off by a section of cliff or path that led off into a cave or dead end and then look up and frustratingly realize that the tower was still high above you even though you had climbed for a good, long while. You had to circle and circle, they designed it so well there is even one point where there is NO path, you have to skirt along a narrow ledge of rock to get to next level of terrain. And when you got past that ledge there were four directions you could go in without any clear idea which way was correct. Along the way you encounter a stray dog that you need to return to its master, a mysterious chateau heavily guarded in secrecy, a werewolf lurking in the mountain passes just before you reach the final stairway to the tower, among other things. And if you have one of the survival mods installed, you have to stop to build fires and make camp several times to prevent from freezing to death! By the time you reach the tower, you are so high up in the mountains that the sound of wind drowns out the character dialogue. You are so high up that even the city of Bruma which is perched on a mountaintop of its own is far below you. It looks and feels so cold up there that you really feel that you're high up in a dangerous, mysterious place far out in the wilderness! And when you reach the tower it is no mere empty, static piece of scenery. You will find it inhabited by a mysterious college of magic where these wizards isolate themselves from the rest of the world and practice strange and arcane forms of magic. Fantastic, just amazing, had to share this with you all! Happy gaming my friends...
