I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Ian Bostridge and Antonio Pappano at a Foyles recital a couple of weeks ago which was the release of this album. There was a fascinating talk with the pair and James Jolly of Gramophone magazine about the songs chosen with Bostridge with that beautiful controlled declamation performing some of the songs. All relate to war and featured George Butterworth d.1916 aged 31 and German Rudi Stephan d.1915 aged 30 both talented young composers seen as the next big things in their respective countries. I have heard several of Butterworth's works gently lyrical pieces but Stephan was an unknown entity. His songs are far more daring harmonically and their subject matter too. He does sound a little like a mix of Wolf and Mahler (also featured in the disc) but what a loss. There is also a work by Kurt Weill setting texts by Walt Whitman who had first hand experience of the carnage of mechanized war during the American Civil War. It is bitingly satirical. A great addition to any classical music library. Last edited by george anson; November 11th, 2018 at 01:30 PM.. Reason: Uncentred text |
