I've noticed in most or all movies about the American Space Program the word "Godspeed" is used.
What is Godspeed?

What is Godspeed?
an expression of one's good wishes for a person's success and safety
[from God spede may God prosper (you)]

[From Middle English God spede (you), may God prosper (you) : God, god; see god + spede, third person sing. present subjunctive of speden, to prosper (from Old English spdan, from spd, success; see speed)

Don't worry- I'm not that smart. I had to look it up!

I stand corrected...

And my mom was from New Jersey so I should have known that!

You're lucky. I wish I could live somewhere like that. Unfortunately where I live you can lock your car, but if they want something inside bad enough, they'll just break the window

Thank you all for your statements.

I really didn't know that the topic is so controversial
and emotionally tainted. Otherwise I wouldn't have asked.

But on the other hand I've learned a lot,
there is no general consent in the meaning of the flag,
it depends.

If I went on holiday to the US and used phrases such as 'I'm going outside to roll a fag', or 'would you knock me up in the morning' would sensitive people faint thinking I'm a perve, or would you know what I meant?

A couple of questions for the American type people.

1) On an episode of Buffy, The Vampire Slayer (and, no doubt other telly shows) i have heard a character say "Don't Bogart the chips/fries/chicken/etc, i guess they refer to Humphrey Bogart, but why?

2) Also heard on the telly, a character might say "I'm Jonesing for some chips/fries/chicken etc, meaning "I really need some blah blah blah", why Jonesing, who the hell is Jones?

1) If you've seen Easy Rider you've heard the song "Don't Bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to me". So it was hippie slang. How it started I have no idea -- Bogart gets very greedy in Treasure Of Sierra Madre, maybe it started there?

2) Jones is black slang (going back at least to the 1960s) for a strong desire, addiction. "Love Jones" was a soul song of the early '70s, and it inspired the Cheech and Chong spoof "Basketball Jones".

How it started I have no clue. "Johnson" is black slang for penis, perhaps the two are related.

Cheers Nick.

In the UK John Thomas is a slang word for the Penis.

Just thought you'd like to know.

And speaking of getting fired. I've noticed far too often (enough to make me think that this may be true) that a boss or employer can just fire someone for no apparent reason. This sort of thing would never happen in Australia without the unions getting involved and/or an unfair dismissal case in court.
