VLC display problem with MP4/MKV formats

Until a few weeks ago, it ran perfectly for many years. But then display problems started. They look like this:

At first I thought, "Ok I need a VLC update." So I got one, but nothing changed. Yet another update, but nothing changed

The problem does not appear with AVI format

Any ideas?

Tools >> Preferences >> Video >> Uncheck "Use hardware YUV>RGB conversions". Click Save. Exit vlc player and re-open vlc. The problem should be solved

5 things to try including the above

1] Adjust video color with NVIDIA settings
2] Change the Video card Settings
3] Set OpenGL as the Output video method

If this does not help then select ‘Tools’ from the menu, navigate to ‘Settings’ and choose ‘Video’. Then you can try the following, in the order of decreasing playback performance:

Switch to DirectX (DirectDraw)
If that does not work, switch to Windows GDI video output and see.

Thanks, but I don't seem to have that option to uncheck

Found it

Menu Tools -> Preferences (Show settings = All) -> Video -> Output Modules -> Direct Draw
Then on the right panel set it as you want.
Save, exit and restart VLC.

I don't seem to have that array of options, and must have a different version. But switching to DirectX works brilliantly. Problem solved, many thanks!

Could it be a Windows 10 issue? The last update totally ruined my video drivers. I had loads of strange problems, also video playback related, and eventually Windows refused to load at all.

Been there with this one.

I did an uninstall then a fresh install using the file I found using my favourite search engine.
