Notre Dame is not just any old building or any old church.

Absolutely.

Let us not forget that in a sense these grand cathedrals - Notre Dame and others - are not just churches, they represented the aspirations of a whole society and culture reaching towards the limit in the grandest way they knew how.

Countless people labored for decades to build these. Men spent their entire lives building them, going from apprentice to master stonemason over the years and having children, growing old and dying even, before the work was complete.

I'm not religious, but if you can't find a place in your heart for the grandeur of such splendiferous works of art and the devoted craftsmanship that went into them, and feel a sense of sadness at their destruction, then I pity you.

It'll cost the old goat!

The French girl who's staying with me tells me she went on a school trip to Paris a couple of years ago and they all got dragged round Notre Dame and other boring bollocks , she'd have preferred shopping.

The report is that they saved much of the artwork. In a way it is fortunate that the fire started in the roof beams. Much of the structure is intact. However, I read that the restoration they had been doing was problematic because the limestone was crumbling.

The cathedral took almost 200 years to build. it was started in 1163 and completed in 1345. It was pretty much wrecked during the French Revolution and rebuilt and restored in the 19th century. It will be rebuilt, perhaps closer to its original plans. We have a lot of experience with these things, given that so many historic buildings had to be restored after World War Two. In the former Soviet Union a whole bunch of replica replacements have been built of historic churches, mosques, and synagogues.

On the other hand, the roof the roof beams themselves dated to the Middle Ages and are now lost forever. The new roof construction will doubtless be superior and fire retardant.

That no body died is a great thing.
From your post though it seems you would not save any building of any historical value especially if it was a religious building of some sort???
Just trying to understand now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when Hitler ordered the destruction of Paris when the Allies were advancing, even he didn't mess with Notre Dame Cathedral.

None of Paris was touched,Von Choltitz feared the personal consequences if He followed Hitler's order and in any case He didn't have nearly enough explosives to do the job.

I don't do God myself, but the cathedral was/is a wonderful building that reflects European history and says something about all of us, doesn't it?
