They have practically no contact with English people; they don't need to speak English. When the farm work is over they will go home. Perhaps some of them will work as cleaners during the winter, and do farm work again next summer, but eventually most of them will leave.

Do you remember the Morecambe Bay disaster in 2004 when more than 20 Chinese were drowned by a sudden high tide when they were picking cockles? They were illegal immigrants who the authorities - helpfully - did not notice.

I will be politically correct and say: on the labour of the Linconshire farm-workers and the Morecambe cockle-pickers, we live comfortably.

That's true, but they are also the reason why wages are so low that British workers would not accept them: mass unskilled immigration drives down wages for the unskilled jobs. After all, British workers were presumably doing these jobs until the expansion of the EU in 2004.

I have read your post several times, And can't agree with any of it..

Low wages.?, They earn more in a week than they could earn in a year where they come from, That's why they never go home.

As for speaking English, You tell me how several different nationalities can communicate at work without a common language, what happens when they go shopping or to the pub..

British people have been working the land for centuries, so these leeches are not needed..

Cockles. Don't eat them, so I don't care.

If people go to England as immigrants, with nothing left in their countries of origin, I think they should adapt as much as possible, and learning English is one of the most important things. It should be the language spoken at home, at least when the children are there. That's how it was with both my sets of grandparents. But if they just go as workers for a few years, I think we can be more tolerant. Let them save to build a new family house, and build up some capital to start a business, and then they're off. You don't need to speak when you go round a supermarket. At work, all their fellow workers are from their own country; they only need one who can speak English. It's similar to the British these days who go and work in Dubai or Shanghai for a few years, and then go home. How much Arabic or Chinese do they learn?

As for British workers and low wages on the farms - I'm not an economist or a sociologist, but as I understand it, some things have changed.

In the relationship between farmers and supermarkets, the latter have become much too strong, and have been able to beat down the prices paid to farmers. Meanwhile, British workers have changed. They used to be willing to be farmworkers, just as they used to be willing to be servants or nannies or charwomen. Now they may do similar jobs, but they prefer to be construction workers, or office cleaners, or teachers' assistants in kindergartens, or whatever. Farmers can't afford to offer higher wages to attract them back - because they have to sell at such low prices to the supermarkets! So reluctantly, but necessarily, we welcome the (legal) Rumanians and even the (illegal) Chinese. Even stranger, this is a sign of Britain's success. Foreigners want to go and work there.

Umm, yeah, I did remove it for a short while then restored it.

I've been down this path before and won't again.

I was away for a few days only to come back and once again see the thread headed exactly where I've said I didn't want it to go ... Race, Immigration and so on, that's where this thread once again starts trouble and arguments, keep in mind it was meant for a laugh and joke.

That said, I don't give a damn about it anymore, I have been a bit hypocritical where I've said about other threads we allow member to let threads evolve, to a point

That all said, I won't be protecting members from getting into trouble any longer, you'll all have to do that yourselves.

I take it as a sign of the times. You are dealing with a populace that are dealing with changing demographics and the difficulties of dealing with those changes and the implications of them. Mind you at the heart of the changes are groups that were once marginalized and now the rules seem to have changed to make that off-limits. You can see where some of the frustration of "political correctness" can come in for some people being that it's sorta constrains people from discussing things they perceived to be a problem.

Then they leave, get in their SUV, turn the car stereo up where every one on the road within 100 feet of them can hear their hip hop rap music using all kind of racial epitaths including the dreaded word you are not allowed to refer to Black folks with.

Samuel L Jackson's character is a drug dealer and illegal gun dealer and he calls his fellow African American friends the racist word many times in the movie:

"You are my BEEP!! You are my best BEEP! You are my #1 BEEP!"

If I was black and I read a script that wants me to say that word on screen and even call other fellow black folks in the movie that word, I would turn the script down and ask for rewrites or tell them to find another actor.

I don't care how many millions they are offering me.

If you believe in something, stick with it and prove that you do and do what you say and believe in. Don't say one thing and do another just because it's for a movie or you are getting paid a lot of $ to do opposite of what you believe is wrong.

Or use the excuse that the reason you said that word on screen in your latest movie is because to bring awareness or for artistic value or some BS explanation like that.

You lose all your credibility right there.

It's getting to the point that saying Negro is racist. Calling an African American a Black person is racist because Black denotes color.

Heck, even calling the NFL Washington team Redskins is racist.

Then all the statues that refers to Confederate persons in the south are to be removed because they remind folks of a time when the South was Segregated and Racist and all schools with names like Robert E. Lee need to be renamed at the cost of millions of dollars.

But the statues of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X are allowed to remain.
