^^ Not forgetting elf 'n safety.

Surprised not to read any opinion of England's selection for the tests against Pakistan. I guess Leach was unlucky to break his pinkie (not the first promising player to suffer like that). Is the guy who has replaced him any good ? They sure do need a proper spinner. Has Ali played his last test ? And what about the recall of Buttler ?

The only real surprises were Dom Bess and Jos Buttler.

The dearth of spinners, especially leg-spinners should be very worrying. Spinners seem to get lost between youth and county cricket. I think it's down to captains really, who want a spinner to be accurate and holding an end up rather than taking wickets. Captains would rather rely on a nagging medium pacer rather than an outright paceman (eg Wood) or spinner, waiting for wicket on seamer-friendly wickets.

I thought Stoneman was lucky, prefer to give Keaton Jennings another go.

I would be more eager to bring in younger players with good technique and temperament. Don't really see a lot but maybe Ollie Pope, Joe Clarke, James Hildreth, Nick Gubbins and Harry Brook?

Alastair Cook, Mark Stoneman, Dawid Malan, Joe Root (capt), Jonny Bairstow (wk), Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Dominic Bess.

Presumably Stokes and Buttler will fly back on saturday whether Rajasthan Royals qualify for the final stages or not.

Against Ireland, Pakistan didn't look very strong in top-order batting but middle order looked ok. Bowling they had a varied attack that could cause problems at Lords. I think England will leave Bess out and rely on 5 man seam attack with maybe a bit of Root.

Just watched Matt Parkinson take 5-68 off 9.5 overs in London one day cup....very impressive. This 21yo hasn't had a lot of first class cricket though...

I like Butler down the order. In face I would like to see him at some stage with the gloves on. For example, if Bairstow has a long innings, why not start with Jos behind the sticks for the first session, to give Jonny a rest as it were.

Matt Parkinson is a good leggy, and a really nice lad. (he is the boyfriend of a friend of ny Daughters, and at a knock about last summer in our garden, he couldn't get me out, but some deliveries were unplayable) He is short of experience though, but a good season for my beloved Lancashire, might give him a chance later, or for a tour.

Looking forward to Thursday and the resumption of "propper" Cricket.

I'd be very interested to know what trailmaster has learnt about cricket from reading these posts? What a surprise that he's like all of them.

I don't know if he has actually read that many. He has posted that he will go through a thread and thank everyone of the posts. He has also stated that he wants to get to a million thanks given.

Well, cricket is a game that lends itself admirably to statistics.

Personally I would love to take TM along to a day at Lord's and see what he makes of it. He'd enjoy a few beers if nothing else.

I have finished my Thanking of the posts in the thread. I have actually read only a few dozen posts. Like so many of the sports threads they all pretty much are about the same thing. Discussions of players, the games, the attitudes of the media about this or that game or this or that player, discussions of scoring. I myself have seen some cricket games on American t.v. of matches being played in the U.K. It is quite an interesting game, much more than your football(what in America is called soccer).

It would cause unnecessary confusion for close fielders. Wicketkeepers have their own individual preferences as to how close the slips set up and need to develop an instinctive relationship with 1st slip especially. Chopping and changing keepers would get in the way of this. Jonny Bairstow certainly would not want to give up the gloves just because he'd done a bit of batting! And anyway, the main point is that Jonny B is a far superior keeper to Buttler, who in any case hasn't done any keeping since the last England ODI in NZ.
