So my colleague Wendigo is making a 100% valid point - if you don't have a reason to carry killing gear, don't carry it.
I quite often have a Swiss Army Knife in my pocket. I have carried a penknife around since I was at school and it can be very handy at times for minor jobs. There was certainly a time in the distant past when nobody would have given this a second thought. While the police can now decide anything is an offensive weapon if they choose, a Swiss pocket knife with some useful tools is generally considered "street legal" by the Home Office and complies to their restrictions. I also have an expensive Leatherman Wave and would never take this out as it has a locking blade and is not legal to carry in public without a very good reason. In many ways, I'm sorry I bought it, although that was some years ago when these things were not a big issue. While I would never dream of using a knife as a weapon, there are unfortunately now a fair number of fuckwits who will, without a second thought, so I've certainly no objection to reasonable knife laws.

Surely you must at least have heard of WW1 and WW2?

Ban insults by all means but a "riposte", according to what I read, is a "quick clever reply" to something. Sounds like a good thing to me.

I thought you Mods would want to encourage those to improve the quality of debate.

I thought you Mods would want to encourage those to improve the quality of debate.
For example:
If I responded with the one word reply - smartarse! - then that would be a "riposte". It would also be "insulting language" as specifically excluded by my friend Santeefats, who is only reminding you and others of one of the things which the forum rules do not allow. And as you know, I would never dream of making such a response to your quick and clever reply.

A "riposte" can be a "quick clever reply" , which is allowed. It can also be "insulting language", employed as a "quick clever reply" in the self-flattering imagination of the person posting it; which is the road Santee has warned you and others not to go down.

Please let me know if further clarification will be at all helpful.

We're working towards a little bit more mutual civility in our conversations around here. As you are committed to improving the quality of debate, I'm sure you will give us your support Otoko.

I carry a small penknife (Victorinox) which also had scissors that I use to do my nails, because I can do my right hand with my left holding them. It all stems from an old primary school teacher who used to carry a full Swiss Army knife which he used to whittle pencil to a point and the large blade to cut paper folded over into halves. I would never want to carry anything bigger than that in the street. I do have a larger bladed knife or World War 1 bayonet which belonged to an uncle of mine. I do think it is sad that kids have to carry large knives for protection these days.

Citizens who carry knives or any other weapon for protection are more likely to get injured or killed when facing a criminal who is usually much more skilled in the use of offensive weapons. Best thing to do when faced with this kind of situation:
Run like hell!

Trailmaster, out of curiosity, who is your avatar and why did you choose him?

He reminds me of a 60's actor who played a slimey bad guy in an episode of Bonanza or something similar.

I am guessing he played a good guy once in a role that I missed?
