Former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jarrod Bannister has died aged 33, Athletics Australia has confirmed. The javelin thrower, a two-time Olympian, had been living and training in the Netherlands. Australian media outlets reported there were believed to be no suspicious circumstances in his death. Athletics Australia said it was "saddened and shocked", while a number of athletes posted tributes online. "On behalf of Athletics Australia, I extend our deepest condolences to Jarrod's family and friends and urge the athletics fraternity to support each other at this difficult time," chief executive Darren Gocher said in a statement. Bannister is Australia's javelin record holder with a throw of 89.02m in 2008. He won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi two years later. He also represented Australia in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, as well as several world championships. In 2013, he was controversially given a 20-month ban from competing after missing three anti-doping tests. Bannister maintained that he had not missed them deliberately. He said in one instance testers had been given wrong information about his whereabouts.

Influential internet rights pioneer John Perry Barlow has died, aged 70. Mr Barlow was a co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) that campaigns on digital rights issues and was a director of the organisation for many years. He was an advocate of free speech and wrote about the net's potential for making society more representative. Mr Barlow also spent years writing lyrics for the Grateful Dead rock group and also ran a cattle ranch. Bob Weir, one of the band's founding members, tweeted that Mr Barlow would "live on in the songs we wrote".

Cindy Cohn, director of the EFF, announced Mr Barlow's death saying that he died quietly in his sleep on 7 February. Mr Barlow had been ill for several years but few details were given about his medical problems. "It is no exaggeration to say that major parts of the internet we all know and love today exist and thrive because of Barlow's vision and leadership," said Ms Cohn. Mr Barlow's interest in digital rights grew out of his involvement with the Well - one of the earliest electronic chat forums. He was among the first to describe such virtual forums as "cyber-space" and to argue that the novel territory demanded new rules, behaviours and laws. The EFF grew out of the work he did with some of the Well's high-profile members who got into trouble with the police and FBI for a variety of alleged computer crimes. In 1996, he wrote the widely quoted Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace, which asked governments of the world to stop meddling in the affairs of net-centred communities. "You are not welcome among us. You have no sovereignty where we gather," he wrote. In her eulogy, Ms Cohn of the EFF defended Mr Barlow against charges that he promoted a view of the net as a force that would bring about positive social change with few consequences. "Barlow knew that new technology could create and empower evil as much as it could create and empower good. He made a conscious decision to focus on the latter," she said.

Veteran studio executive and producer Jill Messick, the ex-manager of Rose McGowan who found herself caught in the fight between McGowan and Harvey Weinstein, has committed suicide. She was 50.

When will this sexual suffering ever end. I'm not in favor of allowing harassment or groping
or anything of that nature. But it seems to me this accusatory movement has grown like
an avalanche, and like an avalanche it cares not whether it buries the bad or the good.

NFL.com reporting Jim Garrett the former NFL coach and scout has died. Garrett was father of Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett. Another of his sons Judd is a former London Monarchs player and led the league in receptions in 91. Judd, Jason and another brother John all played in the World League in 91.
