I'm sorry to say that I expect death to take me like a modern general anaesthetic. Total darkness, but it will last forever. I will simply switch off and that will be that.
I sometimes wish I was religious. I see the attraction people have with being re-united with all the people who have been important to them in the past. I also understand the fear of death being total oblivion. If there was an afterlife, it would be great, wouldn't it? I'd want to know every past human secret, all of natures secrets and explore the Universe. For me an even more attractive afterlife might be to merge with an all enveloping cosmic consciousness, that was perhaps the very stuff that binds the Universe together. If there was anything else and the slightest proof existed, it would make this word fantastically better, but there isn't. Religion simply originated as Harry Potter for illiterate peasants and was used as a very effective method of mass control. Much of it is ridiculous nonsense. For me, every day here is important and valuable, not some eventual phantom zone that is most unlikely to exist. |

What happens when you die?
I'll tell you what... first I'll welcome you with a list of your sins. If you ain't worth it, I'll let you burn in the eternal flames or give your poor soul to my minions. They have Carte Blanche so they're perfectly able to do whatever freaking torment they wanna do to you. But well...if you deserve a second chance, I'll probably offer you the opportunity to go back to earth for servicing purposes only. One of them is doing well right now. I guess we call him POTUS. See you soon!

Why should I have more of an afterlife than a squirrel has?
When the lights go out, the lights go out. If I am wrong, I hope to spend eternity in the British Museum. Or the Smithsonian. Last edited by charliels531; February 19th, 2018 at 01:14 AM.. |

Just before lights out I guess the relative hypoxia will have a nice out of worldly type experience for the microsecond that you have a memory of it. I liked the idea that the tribe that delivered a death sentence by putting the head under tension by a bent palm tree and then severing the neck in a single blade swipe to have the head catapult through the air......my idea of the theme park ending |

We get reincarnated but back into our old lives. We just keep reliving the same life over and over. That is why we have deja vues.

i really hope there is some kind of afterlife, other than my maudlin memories.
I dunno, but I've had two old friends die in the last two weeks, plus an acquaintance.
Also have four dead ex-girlfriends. Soon i'll have more associates on 'the other side' than living. |

You sound like me. I guess it's the misfortune of being the healthy one that comes from a long lived family...you end up being the last one around.

When I die, all electrochemical activity in my brain will cease. My consciousness will end and I will no longer exist. Period, full stop, end of story.
BTW, I plan to donate my body to science -- specifically, UCLA Medical School. The UCLA campus is only a ten-minute drive from my home. They won't even have to send a refrigerated van. Just toss me in the back of a pickup truck and I'm outta here. You are a fluke of the universe. You have no right to be here. And whether you can hear it or not, the universe is laughing behind your back. |

For me it's the dead ex-girlfriends that are the hardest. And most were younger than me.
