Melissa Gilbert was born in Los Angeles, California USA, and was put up for adoption immediately after birth (which is a first for this thread), but was adopted within a day, by the actor and comedian Paul Gilbert and his wife, dancer and actress Barbara Crane. They divorced when she was 8 years old. She began her career as a child actress in the late 1960's, and had appeared in numerous commercials and guest starring roles on television, by the time she won a role as 'Laura Ingalls Wilder' on the NBC series 'Little House on the Prairie'. During the run of Little House from 1974 to 1984, she appeared in several popular television films, including 'The Diary of Anne Frank' and 'The Miracle Worker'.

She continued to work regularly as an adult, mainly in TV movies racking up 70+ credits in her career to-date, including in 2008 and through 2009, playing 'Caroline "Ma" Ingalls' in the musical adaptation of 'Little House on the Prairie' and in 2012 she was in season 14 of 'Dancing with the Stars'.

Married three times she has four boys .... "Thank God I have four sons."

Like many of the former child stars she has battled the personal demons that lead to both alcoholism and drug abuse, and which she wrote about in her 2009 autobiography "Prairie Tale: A Memoir".

The alcoholism only developed as a coping mechanism after she became a mother, and an identified issue while she was President of the Screen Actors Guild. At its peak she said she was drinking three bottles of wine per night, just to 'shut down her brain'.

She had been in therapy for many years when this developed, but had tried drugs and alcohol recreationally in her early twenties and late teens, amongst which were both marijuana and cocaine. She also had to try to avoid developing an addiction to prescription drugs while suffering from a bad back injury.

Trivia:

• The couple later adopted a son, Jonathan, who also co-starred on 'Little House on the Prairie'.
• Gilbert was raised in her adoptive mother's Jewish religion, but did not have any formal religious education or conversion ceremony.
• In 1998, she was inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
• Gilbert was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild in 2001, after a contentious candidacy, in which she ultimately beat her opponent, 'Rhoda' actress Valerie Harper, 21,351 votes to 12,613 votes after a second vote was taken.
• Ranked #31 in VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Kid Stars".
• Released her autobiography entitled "Prairie Tale: A Memoir".
• Salary: Little House on the Prairie (1974) $75,000 per week.

Beauty contests are still the starting point for many a gals claim to fame, or just up the greasy celeb pole .... even in PC Britain these contests still attract thousands of girls nationwide. In this tale we are talking the former .... the girl in question was a regional contestant in a round of the Miss England contest in April 2014.

Now in these modern times these girls are meant to show 'social awareness' etc (mainly to escape charges of being nothing more than 'girly shows') so when Ms Georgia Eden campaigned on behalf of Breast Cancer Awareness, one would think that she would have been applauded.

But she forgot the golden rule of pageants, 'no nudity before winning the contest' ..... she posted a rather restrained 'selfie' of herself cupping her breasts to promote checking for lumps ... or so she said. The organisers took a rather different view, and said that the image contravened the rules because it brought the event into disrepute. They then ruled that she could not take part in the Miss Oxfordshire heat of the competition.

Miss Eden challenged the ruling saying she tweeted the image twice in March with the after losing a close friend to the disease last year. But this cut no ice with the organisers who said 'She may have made a mistake but you can't be in a beauty pageant and a page three model, they are completely different worlds. The Miss England representative has to be someone of a certain calibre and she is not suitable.' .... and out she went.

In this expulsion she joins a lot of other girls on this thread .... it remains to be seen if she gets to the top anyway ... publicity cuts both ways, as many other of our ladies have found.

She was fired from the Reality TV show 'Pawn Stars' after pictures from a 2008 specialist tattoo soft porn shoot were redistributed on the web following its success ... but not from the 'Gold & Silver Pawn Shop' itself, and apparently 'She’s out doing her own thing now. It’s just the production company did not want her working there anymore' ..... according to the shop owner. All this was in Las Vegas in 2012 by the way.

Last I could find, she was resurrecting her modelling career, but its not clear if she's still at the shop, and apparently she was suing all and sundry from the production company of the TV show ... although its not easy to see on what grounds.

Tara Reid was born and raised in Wyckoff, New Jersey, USA. A normal childhood when she graduated from Barnstable Academy, an alternative high school and the Professional Children's School, in Manhattan.

However, she had begun acting at age nine, as a regular on the game show 'Child's Play', and appeared in over 100 commercials for corporations including 'Jell-O', 'McDonald's', 'Crayola' and 'Milton Bradley'. As a teenager, she was on 'Saved By The Bell: The New Class'. So she had all the credentials to transitioned to movies, when in 1998 she landed her breakout role in 'The Big Lebowski' (one of my favourite films). She went on to perform in a number of movies including the wildly successful 'American Pie' in 1999. Things started to slip after that when following 'American Pie 2' her films started to bomb at the box office and she returned to the small screen as a recurring character on the NBC sitcom, 'Scrubs', appearing in 11 episodes of Season 3. But that didn't halt the slide, and her E! Channel's reality TV show 'Taradise' was cancelled in February 2006 due to poor ratings. She filmed a commercial for 'Dodo', an Australian budget telephone and Internet service provider in 2007 followed by a string of direct-to-video films. Her latest role was in the thriller film 'The Fields', which was released in 2011.

A stint on the British reality series 'Celebrity Big Brother 8 ended whenshe received the fewest votes and became the third celebrity to be evicted from the house ... she is now doing music videos ... for Jedward!! Actually she is apparently still getting movie roles .... but its safe to say you won't see many of them.

She has supplemented this with a clothing line with Ed Hardy designer Christian Audigier, entitled Mantra, that hit high end department stores in 2009.

Some rather old fashioned escapades .... In June 2001, Reid and Carson Daly broke off an engagement. This was the start of a string of marital misapprehensions ... in January 18, 2010, Reid's boyfriend Michael Axtmann, an internet entrepreneur from Nuremberg, proposed to her but by April 20, it was reported that the wedding had been called off and her relationship with Axtmann had ended, with a representative stating: "Tara Reid has confirmed that she will not be moving forward with her May 22 nuptials."

In November 2010, she started dating Danish businessman Michael Lillelund. According to People magazine, on August 14, 2011, Reid's spokesman reported that she and Lillelund were married the day before in Greece .... However, Lillelund denied it, stating he had not been in contact with Reid since February 2011

Undeterred, and still in August 2011, Reid publicised that she had married Bulgarian financier Zachary Kehayov, then in October of that year she announced that they were not legally married.

Following her first engagement break up, she suffered from Anorexia nervosa. In October 2006, Reid acknowledged in an interview with 'US Weekly' that she had liposculpting. Apparently she felt that her breasts were uneven and that she wanted a "six pack" for a new movie role ... however the plastic surgery "went wrong" and also resulted in deformity. In the same interview, Reid's new plastic surgeon, reported that he performed a procedure called a "doughnut mastopexy" to correct her original augmentation, and performed additional liposuction in hopes to even out her stomach.

She was obviously happy with the results of all this (or airbrushing was promised), as she posed for a pictorial in the January/February 2010 issue of Pl*yboy, although earlier reports had indicated she had actually posed nude for the magazine.

Ashley Greene born in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. She went to University Christian School before transferring to Wolfson High School when she was in tenth grade before she moved to Los Angeles, California, at the age of 17 to initially pursue a modelling career but at only 5'5", she was told she was too small and so opted for an acting career.

The usual small roles interspersed with working in restaurants were followed by a big break in 2008 when she was cast in the vampire film 'Twilight' which became a franchise. She has also made other less well known films ..... she apparently has high hopes of a successful career after the twilight franchise has run its course, and to that end has several films in post production (see Megan Fox and her career outside of the transformers franchise for that likelihood).

In 2009, nude 'selfies' of Ms Greene were leaked onto the internet ... where they have firmly stayed. Her lawyer issued a threat to use cease and desist orders based on 'copyright', to sue anyone who showed the pictures .... time seems to have mellowed the threat as the pictures are on numerous 'celebrity nude' sites (including her thread on this one), and blogs. It was never disclosed exactly how the pictures got into the public domain in the first place.

She appeared nude in a body painted bikini, Greene posed for 'SoBe' advertisements that ran in the 2010 issue of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition .... which makes it OK this time apparently.

In March 2013 she was involved in a strange fire which started from an unattended candle in her West Hollywood apartment in the 'Granville Towers', and which resulted in her dog dying .... her neighbours later sued her for the 'injuries' they sustained fleeing the fire. It took 55 fire fighters to bring the blaze under control.

Rose Boote was born in Ireland in 1878 to a Catholic family Tipperary, the daughter of a gentleman of independent means (although not rich) .... Educated at the Ursuline Convent School in Thurles (an institution renowned for their proficiency in turning girls into young, well educated ladies, who could take their place even in the highest society), her father, Charles Boote was a stage comedian and her mother a seamstress. She became a musical hall singer as soon as she could using the rather unimaginative stage name of 'Miss Rosie Boote'. She enjoyed modest success but then when she joined the ranks of the chorus at the old Gaiety Theatre in London during the run of 'The Shop Girl' in 1895 which was being performed by the promoter George Edwardes (a Wexford man), theatrical company. By 1898 she had risen to becoming a principal in the company and was given the part of Marietta the flower girl in 'The Runaway Girl' which brought her some fame.

However in 1900 she became the "Toast of the Town", to use the term coined at that the time, when she took her great chance in the role of 'Isabel Blyth' in 'The Messenger Boy', in which she was also entrusted with the main song of the show 'Maisie' for which Lionel Monckton had composed the music. 'Gaiety Girls' were considered to be distinct from the dancing girls and corseted actresses from London’s earlier musical burlesque shows. The popularity of the musical comedies being performed on the Gaiety Theatre depended, mainly on these beautiful dancing troupes of Gaiety Girls were best known for appearing onstage in bathing attire and in the latest fashions from London and Paris.

After this success, she chose to retire from the stage to get married in 1901, and never sought to return to it, although she continued to take a lively interest in affairs of the theatre. There were two sons and a daughter of the marriage. Her husband went on to gain the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the 2nd County of London Imperial Yeomanry and fought in the First World War between 1915 and 1918. He died aged 64 in 1943. Rose survived him until 1958 when she died aged 80. She was interred alongside him at the family plot on an island at their beloved Headfort Estate.

The Oops was her marriage .... oddly given her profession, that was not the impediment, she was only following a long line and rather well worn path of being courted by the young gentlemen who followed the stage stars aka “Stage Door Johnnies.” In fact Edwardes encouraged these young men, and had arranged with 'Romano’s Restaurant', on the Strand, for his girls to dine there at half-price. It was good exposure for the girls and made 'Romano’s Restaurant' the embodiment of London’s night-life.

No in this era, it was the fact that she was a very devout Catholic, and her suitor was the under the age of consent, and very Protestant Freemason nobility, the future fourth Marquess of Headfort, that was the cause of the scandal.

By insisting on marrying her he kicked off a chain of events that caused a great scandal ..... particularly as he then converted to the Catholic faith. Tremendous efforts were made to prevent the marriage by all of Lord Headfort’s relatives and friends, even the non too well behaved King Edward endeavoured to use his influence in the same direction. King Edward asked Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimar, who was Colonel of the First Life Guards, to undertake whatever was necessary to prevent the marriage. Prince Edward informed the Marquis that as he was a first lieutenant in the First Life Guards, if he married this music hall actress his resignation would be expected ... he would be ruined. Under duress, the Marquis resigned his much cherished commission as first lieutenant in the First Life Guards, and married her in April 1901.

Even his resignation was made difficult, after forwarding his resignation papers to Lord Roberts. His Commander in Chief now refused to accept his resignation, and instead ordered the Marquis to hold himself in readiness to go to South Africa, on active service to fight the Boers. He was forced to insist on resigning, and Edwardian English society was shocked ... He was a Protestant and leading Freemason marrying a Catholic showgirl, and on top of this he had resigned a prized army commission on the verge of active service in a patriotic war .... It couldn't be worse.

The couple returned to Kells, County Meath, after their honeymoon and were well received by large crowds at station, and lived between their home at Headfort House, Kells, Co Meath and a London townhouse.

She and her husband’s alleged “popularity as progressive landlords ensured that Headfort survived the struggle for Irish independence largely unscathed” ... although she had to “deftly manage the dwindling finances of the estates of some 22,000 acres in Cavan and Meath, and Kells in Co Meath, proved a brilliant hostess at numerous house parties, and was attentive to the concerns of the Headfort tenants, and the local community”.

They were eventually received back into London Society, when they were invited to one of the most important balls of the season. Princess Christian and other members of the royal family were there, and none of the most exclusively disposed members of the aristocracy, who had been invited, stayed away.

Trivia:

• Her husband became a member of the first Seanad of the Irish Free State between 1922-1928.
• The entrance of Lord Headfort and his chorus-girl wife was of course the sensation of the evening. Lady Headfort is reported as “bearing herself in a manner which every one declared to be perfect.” Her gown was reported as one of the most beautiful costumes observed at the ball and her appearance and her manners were better than those of the grandees dames, who crowded around, eying her inquisitively.
• She was one of the very few people who ever attended three Coronations in Westminster Abbey, Edward VII, George V and George VI.

Rosie Boote looses a dancing shoe, 1896

‘There was an unrehearsed incident at the Leeds Grand Theatre the other evening. Miss Rosie Boote, a lively dancer with a facility for high kicking, was executing some vigorous steps when the shoe of her right foot flew high up into the auditorium, and it is supposed reached the dress-circle. The lady discontinued her dance, and was carried off the stage by an actor. The audience, however, uproariously demanded a reappearance, and Miss Boote, with one foot still shoeless, came hopping on to smile her acknowledgements. Doubtless some lucky fellow is treasuring the dainty shoe of the fair Boote as a memento of an unusual experience.’

Weluree Ditsayabut born in Tha Muang, Kanchanaburi Thailand, she graduated from school and she studied at that Faculty of Humanities, in Kasetsart University. She decided to take the first steps towards celebrity via the beauty pageants and entered the Miss Thailand stages of the Miss Universe contest in 2014, representing her home town of Kanchanaburi.

The final was held on May 17, 2014 at Royal Paragon Hall, Siam Paragon in Bangkok, where she won (beating early bookie's favourite Pimbongkod Chankaew who finished 1st Runner-up), and was crowned Miss Universe Thailand on May 17th 2014 in a blaze of publicity and TV coverage (its a big thing in Asia, as anyone who follows this thread knows).

Anyone who follows the news knows that Thailand has been paralysed by an increasingly violent and bitter dispute between supporters of the popularly elected Pheu Thai 'Red-shirt' party (supported mainly by the peasants and working classes, and some of the very wealthy), and the People's Democratic Reform Committee - a right leaning pro business party (supported by the middle classes but oddly, not all the very wealthy), but which only garners minority support.

So in to this tense political debate unwittingly steps our heroine ..... when some of Ms Weluree's past comments on both 'Twitter' and 'Facebook' were resurrected, and it turns out that she's a rather passionate opponent of the government and its "red-shirt" supporters, and did not hold back saying what she thought of them.

"You red-shirt bastards, get out of here," she wrote last November. "Thailand is contaminated by people like you who want to overthrow the monarchy. You're wicked - you won't die peacefully in your beds. I'm not neutral. I'm siding with the King. You red-shirt leaders should all be executed." .... you go girl!

Obviously, this provoked a storm of negative comment fired back at Ms Weluree on social media sites in Thailand, with many people saying she is not fit to represent Thailand anymore. She was forced to appear on the television channel which had sponsored the contest, and after some rather gentle prodding (different culture lads), she apologised to everyone for her "inappropriate behaviour", and promised it would not happen again.

"Those were words I used among my close friends," she said, "and because I am young and impetuous, and did not think too much about them." .... whether this would have done this trick we may never know because in what I can only assume to be a coincidence, just hours after her forced 'apology' the Thai Army declared martial law in Thailand.
