I don't know the specifics. I would think the bikini contests were an ongoing thing at Oscars, video or not, and on occasion there would be a video produced. The "California Girl" label probably was invented for the video series and Oscars may have called their contests something else.

What the contests were called seems significant to us collectors, seem "set in stone" to us, but these names and arrangements are a dime-a-dozen to the promoters and producers and have little importance to them. It's just a little marketing "hook" to them. The contest itself held in the club might have even been called something else and only labelled "California Girl" in the video production.

With respect to compensation, if a girl signed a release you can be sure she was compensated: that's standard practice. It's a contract: the producer gets something of value (the release) in exchange for a payment (read $ or prize). Whenever a video was produced the girls were paid something upfront for the release, guaranteed.

The fact that certain girls appear again and again in the various video series is more a reflection of the efforts of the promoter/producers than the girls themselves. The "talent" gets called up ahead of time and notified of the upcoming event/shoot. Certain girls were much more reliable, and better performers, than the run-of-the-mill contestants. They'd get called up ahead of time and invited. A girl with a head on her shoulders would keep her eye out for opportunities, but if she had the body to go with it after her first efforts to "get known" she'd be contacted ahead of time because she was a valuable asset.

The promoters had long lists of phone numbers and always called up the talent ahead of time: they had a lot riding on making sure the contest went off successfully, whether a video was being made or not. These things were called "contests", and indeed there were prizes, but really they were "shows" and the competition angle was just a gimmick. The seasoned performers knew this, and newcomers caught on soon enough. It was a rare thing for there to be a true "contest" event.

Gotcha....yes, that whole synopsis meshes with the few girls I talked to including Heather Kennedy and Ginger Miller. Ginger told me she was paid for CGBC #5 (didn't ask about #3) but said it was a disaster for her: she got there late, had to rush the make-up job, last-second music switch, etc etc.

I told her she still should have won -- couldn't BELIEVE some of the girls who got chosen to goto the semi-finals -- but as it was 6-7 years ago, she had gotten over it by then. In fact, she was working for ERI for a while (told me she personally bought 150 of the WILD BIKINIS videos -- I hope they gave her a discount -- with her on the cover) and said it was a great company to work for.

Heather remembered Ginger and a few other girls from Oscars, too.

Makes sense....most of these girls weren't interested in winning contest money but getting 'discovered' for modeling or acting gigs. I think Julie Kruis managed to parlay some contest wins into some movie and modeling stuff but for most of the girls it turned out to be a pipe dream.

These are photos from a bikini contest that have been floating on the internet for at least ten years. This is from a car dealership I think in California that hosted the contest, just by the styles of the bikinis and contestants wearing them this is probably from 1992 or 1993. A period, as this thread stresses, was much better for contests then today; you can see why judging by the photos. Just thought I'd post them as a change of pace. And, on a side note nice to see a mix of Latina, Asian and White beauties in the contest; America is indeed great!

Well, Viathinair, still haven't found that earlier Jacksonville bikini show I posted, but I haven't given up yet!
While looking for it, I found I had recorded another clip I thought I had lost on a tape that got moldy (perhaps I saw some of the same girls on it) Not great beauties perhaps, but nice bodies. Old footage, late 80's I would guess? Seemed very hot to me at the time!
Still seem to have a problem getting clear caps, sorry.

Well, found this on the same disc...not exactly a bikini contest, but there are girls in bikinis. A bit of wet T shirt contest footage, but this ran on Inside Edition, late80's/early 90's, so no see thru action. Well, looking at it again, maybe a bit. Still, interesting. Like the girl in green showing her but, but I like the large breasted women at the beginning and the end. Guess I'm not too picky.
