You make excellent points about the specifics of this particular case; her age, the mitigating conditions of the incident, the history of the relationship would all factor into the sentencing. There's really not much point in keeping a 73 year old woman in jail. My point had to do the averages of sentencing and this one seemed about average considering the issue of age and it being the first offense. As you point out, it actually could be considered abnormally high and perhaps something about her behavior in jail and in court brought this on. The American criminal justice system can be pretty brutal and life for the elderly in the US can also be pretty harsh.. It's a shame her life went off the rails; she certainly was a beautiful woman way back when. Some woman manage to maintain that beauty by living positive lives. Some don't.

DAs can do some shitty things to people without money. Battered women often seem to be treated harshly and their self defense claims ignored. If she has gotten hold of sobriety after being a problem drinker, the time will have been well spent. Drunks are well known PITAs.
