Mary Queen of Scots might have been a looker, but she was a pretty dangerous woman to be around- First husband, Francis II of France died aged 16, within two years of marrying her, Second husband Lord Darnley was murdered, probably by her third, the Earl of Bothwell, who outlived her, but spent the last decade of his life in exile as a prisoner in Denmark.
Add her Italian secretary David Rizzio, (murdered by Bothwell on suspicion of being the Queen's lover), and a French poet at her court, Pierre de Bocosel de Chastelard, (executed for treason after falling in love with her), to say nothing of George Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, whose spell as her jailor at Tutbury Castle pretty much cost him his marriage after his wife, the redoubtable Bess of Hardwick, began to suspect he was getting rather too close to his prisoner...
Looking at that little lineup of the men in her life, then no matter how hot she may have been, Mary definitely starts to sound like a woman you
really shouldn't have fancied - unless you planned on ending your days murdered, executed, or insane and chained to a pillar in a Danish dungeon...

Elizabeth certainly had plenty of opportunity and motive to have Mary beheaded given the threat posed by the intrigue and plots that circled around her, but for whatever reason took the best part of 20 years to actually get round to it
