By trial and error I found out that the maximum size of an upload seems to be ~100 MiB: a picture set with 99 MiB was accepted, one with 109 MiB failed with the above error. Larger galleries cannot be created by uploading files with a browser.

I suspect it is possible to create larger galleries by using the Pixhost API for them, using your own upload tool. But the question is whether the .zip download of such galleries succeeds, or if it also fails with a 413 error.
