I believe that Mary was a pioneer in a women's lib way. She wanted to say that sex was fun, enjoyable, nothing dirty or smutty. She had a good body- not the greatest, was an exhibitionist and enjoyed being admired and giving pleasure.
That she was exploited by Sullivan there can be little doubt! the tragedy is that she is almost forgotten now because she was well in advance of her time.
