I'm new here. Thanks to all the generous contributors.
I have a theory. It was 1968 as I recall, when women began wearing tights. Up till then most women wore suspender belts or girdles as day-to-day items of clothing, but after that they became bedroom wear for the benefit of us chaps. It seems to me that in the later S&S pix many of the girls are wearing what you might call a "bedroom" suspender belt, no more than some frilly elastic, whereas in the earlier pictures they wore "proper" suspender belts which an adventurous youth might reasonably expect to encounter in his early fumblings. I believe that the S&S photographers had to supply the suspender belts after 1968 and that many of the pictures feature the same flimsy example.
