California is blessed in having the most dynamic and creative businesses in the country. It produces 13.5% of U.S. GDP. If it were a country, it would rank 6th in the world. Think about it. California by itself has a larger GDP than either France or India. No wonder people sneak in here. Who knows how long we can keep it up if we let our university systems decline.
Just a thought: any system of governance always has serious issues. There's a strange default idea that somehow something as massive as pensions and healthcare finance would be "Ok, that's fine, we can forget about them now" . . . they're issues that are rarely crises, but always need attention.

That's one of my beefs with the crankies. Their implicit idea is that somehow government "should be simple".

It can't be.

Regulating biopharmaceuticals can't be simple. Pension plans in an age when people are living longer than you expected aren't simple.

All in all, California is pretty impressive.

I share with you concern about the University system-- this is a jewel, but its struggling under the budget cuts and the enrollments. Really deserves attention; but that's a "price of success" more than a "price of failure".

The University of Mississippi isn't burdened by thousands of folks who want chemical engineering or physics PhDs.
