It has come into the language here following an advertising campaign that used the line "you either love it or hate it". The idea rang very true - people either adore it or pull a face and say "yuck!" So now the term "marmite" or "marmite thing" has become a way to describe those things that starkly divide us.





It is actually industrial waste of sorts - the dregs left over from brewing. A "marmite" itself is actually the type of earthenware pot pictured on the label.
