The first notes of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" a/k/a the theme to "2001: A Space Odyssey" are the notes of the overtone series, those notes that vibrate sympathetically with the note being played. This subconciously gives the opening its' sense of grand majesty and wonder that Kubrick was looking for in the title sequence.

These are, if the note being played is a "c", the octave above, (also c) a fifth above that (g) and a fourth above that (c again).
