If it was something more malicious in one pic via the 3rd party ads (malvertising)
plugins or out of date software are the usual route that results in large spikes in the usage of memory or cpu which leads to crashing.

I disable all of my plugins when I go looking at pics as you never know when those types of programs will become vulnerable and the gap between that and a patch gives the malicious a period of opportunity.
