I am not sure but I think the current (excessive) wave of it is an outcome of the 'modern' thought that armpit hair (and leg hair, natural odor, and etc.) is somehow unfeminine and therefore "unclean".

I notice a similar excess when modern parents have a need for their children to live in a completely sterile environment rather than allow kids to explore, grow, and play like ... children.
