English-born American actress and film director, and the only woman directing
feature films in Hollywood during the 1950s.
She played tough and determined women in thrillers such as High Sierra (1941). Later, while
continuing to act, she set up an independent production company (1949), for which she directed
several low-budget films during the 1950s. Her works include The Hitch-Hiker (1953), an all-male
suspense story, and the domestic drama The Bigamist (1953). Lupino went on to direct episodes for
various television series through the 1950s and 1960s.
