I hope you do not believe the Haig/Churchill contention has any relevance. Very early on Haig was sure the only method of victory would be to advance infantry steadily towards beltfed machine guns. The definition of victory in a war of attrition is they kill nine hundred and ninty nine thoudand nine hundred and ninety nine of ours but we kill a million of theirs then we have won.
If the only oder is for the poor bloody infantry to advance over the course of a five year war it doesnt matter a flying fuck whose mouth it comes out of.
