There are various free password crackers out there. I tried one once on a RAR file with a fairly short password (8 characters, I think). It basically went through every possible combination of ASCII characters (something called a 'brute force' attack). But it seemed to run through them very slowly. I calculated that it would take 273 years to try them all!
