A matter of scale
We don't see the world panoramically: we see (and smell) what is shoved into our faces. We know from the news that the world is rotten, and it does trouble us, but since we seldom have a chance to improve it, we defend ourselves by not obsessing over things which are beyond our control.
Also, don't you find its the small things which often freak you out more? To quote Jean Webster:
''Anybody can rise to a crisis and face a crushing tragedy with courage, but to meet the petty hazards of the day with a laugh - I really think that that requires spirit.''
