Star Trek did something equally lamentable, with everyone's least favorite "Captain", Janeway.
I have no problem with female protagonists-- there have been great women in SF, including the badass of all time, Ripley in the Alien franchise.
But just as I've got no interest in Pat Boone singing Fats Domino, there's no need to rewrite every role.
I'm a bit irritated on the subject--recently saw a performance of "Julia Caesar" -- yes, some PC thespian had decided that Caesar should be a woman.
Its was as [not] compelling as you'd imagine.
So far as "favorite doctors" go, I seem to be the rare fan of Christopher Ecclestone . . . but then I didn't grow up watching it, so it reflects recent viewing.
