Back in the 50's my mother's family took a trip to California, through Death Valley, in the summer, with no AC in the car. The temp had to be pushing 50C. She said my grandfather bought a pan he placed in the middle of the front seat, would buy blocks of ice and place them in the pan, turn on the vents, and let the air blow across the ice. That was their only AC.
