Re the inquisitive intonation: like, you sound like you're asking a question? But you're not really? It seems to be a generational thing. Baby-boomers, like myself, don't seem to use it, it's more Generation-X? So it's probably come out of the mid-80's, maybe from a movie and it might be a Valley Girls thing. Or did they get it from us? An example of someone who uses it a lot of the time is Catherine Freeman, and Greenman's aversion to it might be reflected in the fact that the BBC didn't keep her contract going very long.
