In January 1848 while building a sawmill for a Mr. John Sutter, James Marshall was working in a small river about 50 miles from Sacramento when he found in the river some small nuggets. This was the first gold from the area.
This find, at first kept a little quiet, was to lead to the great Gold Rush of the 1850's and 60's.!
