Handbrake is excellent, and perfect for crunching precisely the kinds of file you have there, something that was ripped at too-high a resolution, producing a file that's too big for the actual visual information it contains. It can also sometimes help with files where the audio track tends to get out of sync when you skip around.

Can be customized in all sorts of ways for particular content and targets. Only downside is that its pretty slow . . .
