John Jenkins was an English composer during the early Baroque period. Not much is know of his early life. He was the son of a carpenter, and he became an expert on the instrument called the viol (later to be called the Viola da Gamba). Most of his musical compositions were made using this instrument. This disc is called Consort Music for Viols in six parts. It is made up mostly of what is called the fantasy or fantasia which is just a form of music where the composer improvises as he goes along. The fantasy first started to be used in the 16th century and is still used today.
