Saw a very cool, recently re-discovered film called "Wake in Fright" about a schoolteacher in an Outback town. Its a wild picture of very drunk people, not exactly flattering to Australia, but with some really amazing scenes of pub life, including the old gambling game "two up" (which I've heard about, but never seen played).

Great performance by Donald Pleasance as a doctor who's gone to seed: "I'm a doctor of medicine and a tramp by temperament"

At first it seems like its just a bit of drunkenness, but after you watch for a while, you realize its about the idea of men and their mates, which is a very Australian concept. A schoolteacher with the hero's manners, if he were in an equivalent American town, would not be received nearly so cheerfully.
