Back around 1980, when his show hit the late-night local line-up (11:00pm), it was an instant sensation amongst teen-aged boys. I don't know about the other kids, but that was the first I'd ever seen of a woman in a garter belt, outside of magazines.
I didn't really get the humour part of it until years later; but at the time, Hill's Angels were an instant draw. It might be fair to say that, of USA-made television there has never been anything quite like it, either before or since. Sure, a lot of USA-made offerings have shown gratuitous amounts of skin, but not with the quirky/brilliant humour, combined with the garter belts.
It was like an old-style burlesque-vaudeville act.
