Default OCR-Software for Photos?

Hi there,

is there OCR-Software (preferably free and Open Source) that reads plain text from photos made by a digital camera?

I'd like to create PDFs from some of my books (text only, no pics or illustrations) for private use, but I don't have a modern scanner.

Unfortunately there's no Win7 64-bit driver for my old Epson Perfection 1650.

I could certainly just create a PDF from the JPGs, but with about 300 sites per book the file would get overly big.

Thanks in advance!

Lep
