Sovereign Hill was set up for a walk back into 1850's colonial Victoria, even before Australia was a nation. Ballarat was at the center of the gold rush and had by far the most gold. I think Victoria is 3rd on the list for most gold found / mined throughout the world. There's still gold there but far too deep for a prospector to mine, anything else is for the mining companies who could afford the expense.
