This clip is amusing but also conveys something of this aircraft's unique presence, possibly the most beautiful of killing machines. I can never hear the noise of a Merlin engine without a stirring of emotions: it is an engineering masterpiece and a symphony of Britain's national defiance in her darkest moment.

It is 20 years since I saw a Spitfire flying and even the RAF's own Battle of Britain Flight specimin hardly ever flies any more. But if you ever see one in the air it is a deathbed memory, never ever forgotten.
