That being said, he probably cursed you out for talking him out of it when the urge to drink became too much. Its part of the parcel of possibly one of the worst addictions (legal addictions.... freely available from just about any shop you go into) to have.
There is truly and honestly nothing more you could have done beyond what you did, however sad that may be. My Aunt was denied, lovingly, but ended up drinking fucking drain cleaner out of desperation. The nature of this beast is at times incomprehensible to those that do not suffer from its forked tongue.
