Lord Carrington
Former Foreign Secretary and last remaining member of Winston Churchill's government Lord Carrington has died at the age of 99. He famously resigned as a point of principle when Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands on his watch - a rare thing these days and despite his being largely blameless.
I met him a couple of times in the course of my work. He was a kind and unassuming man who always introduced himself as "Peter", never Lord Carrington, as he was keen to put people at their ease.
He owned many properties on his Buckinghamshire estate and not one of his tenants had a bad word to say about him. He really looked after them, charged very reasonable rents and was always kind if there was a difficulty.
He was of the privileged landed class for sure - but a true old-school gentleman nonetheless.
