Ich war neunzehn (1968)
Opening sequence
On April 16th, 1945, Lt. Gregor Hecker (Jaecki Schwarz) and his unit are advancing through Brandenburg toward Berlin. They're part of the Soviet 48th Army, coming from the Oder river. 19-years-old Hecker was born to German parents who emigrated to Moscow when he was eight. As Gregor and his comrades advance, facing both civilians and German soldiers, of whom some refuse to surrender, he has to cope with his feelings of ambiguity concerning his birth origins and his sympathies which lie with his adopted homeland.
I Was Nineteen
is based on director Konrad Wolf's own experiences. Like Gregor Hecker, he was born in Germany and relocated to Moscow at age 8 with his parents. Wolf enlisted in the Red Army when he was eighteen. This is one of the best postwar German films, produced by the East German DEFA.
