Custer also went home to face the marital music too!
In 1867, when he was a Lt. Col, he left his post and went off to see his wife - AWOL. He was found guilty by a court and, though some wanted to dismiss him, he was suspended for a year. Some sources also say that he was demoted, but I haven't found any evidence for this.
He was back on duty in 1868.
