I have Virginmedia cable and my package means I get Sky Sports News, which is great on a Saturday afternoon for the footie scores (can't beat Jeff Stelling).

I agree - too flash by half.

There's a couple of exceptions; Monsterquest wasn't too flashy, some of the UFO Files episodes were excellent and Ice Road Truckers isn't too bad at all (all on History). Sadly, most of the others tend to give me a headache. Anyway, youtube is your friend!
