There are so many sensible points in the statement by the French women that it's hard to know where to begin praising it, but above all they distinguish between criminal assault and violence, and ordinary routine annoyances.
In the past, when a man was clumsy with a woman, she would say, "You creep!" . . . and she would tell her friends and they would jeer at him . . . and he would wish he could go to the other side of the world where no-one knew him and start afresh . . . and that was life and life would go on. It was part of the normal give-and-take, or hit-and-hit-back, of sex.
